Can Rabbits Eat Romaine Lettuce?

Romaine lettuce is a staple in many of our diets and is often found in salads and sandwiches. But when it comes to sharing it with our furry friends, is it safe for rabbits to eat?

Yes, romaine lettuce is safe for rabbits to eat and is very nutritious for them. With that said, it is critical to note that romaine lettuce contains Lactucariu, which can potentially get them high and be deadly in large quantities. Therefore, stay within moderation, and your rabbit will get all the benefits without the potential drawbacks.

Don’t just take my word for it though. Watch the video below to see my pet rabbit Mabel eat an entire romaine lettuce leaf! I have been feeding her lettuce leaves daily ever since I got her, and she has always been in great health.

Is Lettuce Safe for Rabbits?

Lettuce as a whole is generally safe and acceptable to feed your rabbits. At the Rabitatas animal shelter, we will often give the bunnies a salad that consists of between 50-70% lettuce.

When it comes to type, we prefer Romaine lettuce or leafy green lettuce as opposed to iceberg lettuce. Iceberg lettuce is safe for rabbits, but it does not contain many nutrients.

How Much Lettuce Should I Give My Rabbit?

Most rabbits can have a surprising amount of lettuce. On average, I give about 1 full lettuce leaf per pound. So if the rabbit weighs 3 lbs, I will give them 3 lettuce leaves.

This is not an exact science but is the general guideline I have been following for many years. As I mentioned in the intro, I’d stay on the side of caution with lettuce and only give out a maximum of 5 lettuce leaves, even if the bunny is heavier.

What are the Benefits of Lettuce for a Rabbit?

Lettuce is rich in numerous essential minerals such as water and fiber, which aid digestion and hydration. Lettuce also provides important vitamins like A, K, and C that contribute to a healthy immune system, promoting good vision, and supporting bone health.

Sharing is Caring When it Comes to Lettuce

Romaine, iceberg, and other leafy lettuce are safe to share with your rabbit. Just remember to not overdo it. The average-sized rabbit should not have more than 3 full pieces a day, but as long as you keep it under that, they will be happy and healthy!

Let me know if you have any questions about incorporating lettuce into your rabbit’s diet. It has become one of Mabel’s favorite snacks in the fridge, and I’m sure your bunnies will love it too.
